While originally from northern California (San Jose),
Danny Johnson now resides in the Los Angeles area. Danny
began playing his classical music training as a
percussionist and performed in recitals and competition
for concert band, stage band, jazz band, as well as
field and marching band while in his elementary and high
school days. During his college years, Danny also shared
Jazz classes with legendary Bluesman, Chris Cain
while at San Jose City College. According to Danny, he
still plays many of the licks he heard Chris playing at
that time! His lessons in school gave him his grounded
foundation for melody, harmony, rudiments, theory, song
structure and composing that he relies upon to this day.
While transplanting to Southern California in 1980,
Danny initially focused less on the clubs and more on
his music studies and recording projects. Many of his
recording are sold and played in domestic and
international countries such as Japan, Jamaica,
Portugal, Jerusalem, and the Soviet Republic just to
name a few. His solo recordings with his 2 groups (Soul
Provider and The Sign) are an example of the wide
range of talent as a writer, arranger, producer, and
even his own engineer while assuming all the duties of
the projects at Junk Records. More recently,
Danny has been frequently seen popping into clubs around
Southern California and sitting in with top players to
maintain his chops.
Danny is also a very sought after session and 1st
call gig player who is a self professed “humble-student”
of various Jazz, Blues, Pop, Rock, and Country styles of
guitar. As a tireless seeker of the “perfect road map
of the fret-board”, Danny is continuing his quest to
study craft in search of what he calls …“a sound
never heard before”. He tips his hat on some of his
recordings to players who influence his decision to
become a guitar player such as Charlie Christian, Chuck
Berry, Chris Cain, BB King, Robin Trower, Steve Morse,
Frank Gambale, Robben Ford, Johhny Hiland, Tommy Castro,
Danny Gatton just to name a few.
